Hold Karl Rove in "Inherent Contempt"

It's time for Congress to get serious.

Before they leave for summer recess, the House Judiciary Committee should vote to hold Karl Rove in "inherent contempt" for disobeying a subpoena and refusing to testify.

Tell the Committee and your member of Congress: No one is above the law, not even Karl Rove. Vote for inherent contempt right away to force Rove to testify!

Nanotechnology: Friend or Foe? Ask Congress to find out.

Nanoparticles are showing up in our everyday household items, but no one knows the long-term consequences of this questionable technology on human health and the environment.

The Senate is currently considering a bill to reauthorize the 21st Century Nanotechnology Research and Development Act (S. 3274), and we're asking them to devote more funding to environmental, health and safety research. Contact your Senator now to ask them to put our health and environment before corporate profit.

The U.S. House Judiciary Committee will hold a congressional hearing this Thursday, July 31, on two brand new, important animal protection bills: one to track animal cruelty crimes, and one to stop the slaughter of horses for human consumption. We need your help getting these new bills started with a bang, and building as much congressional support as possible between now and the end of the session.

Please take action and urge your representative to combat animal cruelty and protect horses!

For 15 years, Congress didn't talk about "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

But the years of silence are over.

Last Wednesday, the Military Personnel Subcommittee of the U.S. House Armed Services Committee met to discuss the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." The hearing started what we hope will be an important national conversation about the national security impact of this outrageous law.

Take a look at a clip from the hearing - then send a note to the members of Congress to thank them for holding the hearing:

After more than three years of grassroots pressure from true patriots like you, Congress finally took step 1 towards impeaching George W. Bush for his High Crimes by holding a "non-impeachment hearing" last Friday.

It's been a tough few years for "we the people."

We've endured repeated abuses of power by the Executive Branch of our government. Time after time, we've watched Congress fail to stand up for what's right. We've seen the very symbols of our democracy tarnished, as our nation's reputation suffers at home and abroad because of these abuses.

It's time to demand better. Join with us by signing the Recapture the Flag Petition. Our goal is to gather 25,000 signatures before 4th of July – so please add your name today!

Lobbyists for foreign governments, politicians, and corporations can avoid disclosing who they work for and how much they're paid if they don't attend meetings about their clients in the U.S. This loophole allows lobbyists to hide their work for brutal regimes and interests working against our values.

Tell your Senators it's time to close the foreign lobbying loophole.

You can help save the oceans every time you go grocery shopping. Consumers buy half their seafood at supermarkets, yet most supermarkets don’t consider where the seafood they sell comes from or how it was caught. Destructive fishing practices and overfishing are two of the gravest threats facing our oceans, and experts predict if current trends continue, global fisheries will collapse in 40 years. Take action – Flex your power as a consumer.

Tell the largest U.S. supermarket retailers to adopt sustainable seafood policies, stop selling destructively fished seafood, and provide informative labeling so customers, like us, can choose the most sustainable seafood and avoid the most imperiled fish. Don’t delay, ocean protection starts with all of us.

A sham spying “compromise” similar to the one we warned you about last week could be rammed through both the Senate and House this week. It’s moving that fast.

In a proposal that makes a mockery of the rule of law, telecom companies that broke the law by supplying mountains of personal information to the government without a warrant will be let off the hook

There’s a deeply disturbing premise behind this dangerous FISA legislation: The president simply had to claim his request was legal for immunity to be granted to telecom companies that illegally handed over personal information.

No matter how illegal, offensive or intrusive a company’s invasion of your privacy has been, it won’t make a difference, because if the president gave the company a note claiming their behavior was legal, they’re completely off the hook.
Congress needs to reject this sham for what it is and

Tell your members of Congress to reject a sham immunity "compromise."

Last month the Bush administration was forced to recognize the serious threats to polar bear survival, listing the bears as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

But just as it made one step forward to protect the bear, the administration took two steps back -- refusing to address the effects of global warming on the rapidly melting sea ice and allowing environmentally damaging oil and gas development to continue in the Arctic.

To counter this massive loophole, representatives Jay Inslee and Maurice Hinchey have introduced a bill to halt oil and gas leases in the bears' Arctic habitat until scientists can fully assess the environmental impacts and designate protected critical habitat.

Support the "Polar Bear Seas Protection Act" and ensure that polar bears get the protection they need to survive.

Congress is wheeling and dealing this week with the White House over whether to give a "get-out-of-jail-free" card to telecom companies that helped eavesdrop on Americans without legally-required warrants.

Just a few weeks ago, the House stood strong and refused to give immunity to the phone companies that engaged in illegal wiretapping. But now, Congress is considering a "compromise" bill that could make it impossible for us to find out the details of the domestic spying program and hold accountable anyone who broke the law.

Tell your members of Congress: No deal on telecom immunity.

For years, BioGems Defenders have fought to halt the U.S. government's systematic capture and killing of Yellowstone's bison -- better known as American buffalo -- as they roam beyond the boundaries of the park in search of food during the harsh winter months. But this year the rate of slaughter has reached unprecedented proportions with more than 1,400 buffalo dead -- fully 30 percent of the buffalo population. In response, the NRDC Action Fund, our partner organization, is mobilizing a massive outcry to stop the killing.

Tell the National Park Service to stop the slaughter of Yellowstone's wild buffalo.

We all learned in elementary school how a bill becomes a law. First it's passed by Congress, then the President signs it.

But Rep. Don Young (repulsive republican-Alaska) seems to think we all skipped a step. He claims he did nothing wrong when he secretly changed the 2005 highway act, after it had been passed, to redirect $10 million to a new transportation project favored by one of his wealthy campaign donors!

You read that right. Rep. Young acted in the dead of night – without Congress' knowledge or approval, without the American people's awareness – to change the language in a bill after it had been passed by Congress, but before it got to the President's desk.

Ask your Representative to call for an investigation of Rep. Young today!

After seven years of watching Big Oil pay off politicians to block all global warming legislation, we may finally break through.

The Climate Security Act, which will soon be voted on in the Senate, shows promising first steps by calling for significant reductions in the emission of global warming pollutants.
But it's not enough in the face of a global warming catastrophe, and this is a critical opportunity to demand the precise solutions we need. For one, the bill needs to cut global warming pollution levels 80% by 2050.

Send your senators a note TODAY urging them to strengthen the Climate Security Act and pass a strong bill.
