The Bush Administration wants to cut essential funding for our National Forests and for nearby rural communities. Adding insult to injury, the Administration has even proposed the sell-off of National Forest lands to make money (H.R. 3058).

On June 3, the House of Representatives will vote on legislation to continue funding for National Forests and communities. Please use our letter below to tell your Representative to support H.R. 3058, the Public Land Communities Transition Act, so rural communities and National Forests will receive the funding they urgently need.

At 17 million acres, the Tongass is home to a stunning variety of wildlife, including wild salmon, bears, eagles, and wolves. Tired of neocons, extremist evangelical Christians and right-wing Jewish leaders co-opting what it means to be "Pro-Israel?" For too long, these have been the loudest voices in American politics when it comes to Israel and the Middle East.
It's time to give voice to our values -- and call for real peace and security for Israel, the Palestinians and the entire Middle East. Stand strong against the politics of fear.

We can create the political power to promote real peace and security, without the hatred and fear-mongering from the extremists. Together, we can fight for a truly "pro-Israel" perspective: real American leadership for a negotiated end to the Arab-Israeli and Palestinian-Israeli conflicts.

Please take a moment to stand for a new pro-peace, pro-Israel political voice »

A new non-union grocery chain called Fresh & Easy is opening in communities throughout Southern California, Nevada and Arizona.

What’s different about this non-union grocery chain is that Fresh & Easy is owned by Tesco, one of the largest and most aggressive corporations in the world. Tesco is known as the "Wal-Mart of Britain" and they’re now opening stores in the United States under the name Fresh & Easy.

Tesco has refused to meet with UFCW leaders, and just like Wal-Mart, they want their stores to be non-union.

Tesco has already opened over 60 stores and are planning to open a further 150 by the end of the year. We cannot afford another company like Wal-Mart in our communities. Here’s what you can do:

For the first time in our history, the American military has turned its operational apparatus upon the American public. And it's high time that it stop.

On April 21, the New York Times ran a shocking expose on a Pentagon program to generate favorable news coverage of the Iraq war. Starting with the run up to the war, the program fed talking points and information to a set of retired military officials who appeared on TV thousands of times parading as objective pundits.

We're teaming up with some other groups like Freepress to send a letter to the five members of Congress - Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Armed Service Committee Chair Ike Skelton, Senate Armed Service Committee Chair Carl Levin and House Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs Chair John Tierney - who can start up Congressional hearings on this despicable program.

Repulsive Republican Pigs are in a panic about their chances this election year. And they're pulling out all the stops to keep voters away from the polls.

Their favorite vote-suppressing tactic of 2008? State laws requiring government-issued photo ID in order to vote.

Good thing we have champions in the states like Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius, who just yesterday vetoed a harmful voter ID law in that state correctly noting that it would "only work to disenfranchise many of the electorate and serve as a barrier to their participation in the democratic process."

And thanks to champions like Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan, who worked tirelessly with voting rights advocates in Missouri to urge the legislature not to pass the voter ID bill it was considering. On Friday, defying previously-held expectations, that bill went down with the end of the legislative session.

Voters in every state deserve leaders like Gov. Sebelius and Secretary of State Carnahan who will stand up for their rights.

The federal government is once again proposing to allow longline fishing for swordfish in the waters off California and Oregon. Longlining, in which a single vessel can lay out over 60 miles of line and 1,000 hooks at a time, is one of the most destructive fishing practices ever invented. In addition to depleting the oceans of the targeted swordfish and tuna, longlines hook, entangle, and kill tens of thousands of seabirds, sea turtles, marine mammals and sharks. The critically endangered Pacific leatherback sea turtle has been reduced from over 100,000 nesting females to fewer than 3,000 over the past 25 years, primarily due to the impacts of longline fishing.

Swordfish longlining has been banned in waters off the West Coast since 2004, following a successful lawsuit by the Center for Biological Diversity. Just last summer, the Center led opposition to a proposal to allow an experimental longline fishery in these waters, which are crucial to the Pacific leatherback. Even though the California Coastal Commission has already denied that proposal before, the National Marine Fisheries Service and the permit applicant are once again pushing to allow longline fishing in these waters.

Please let the agency know that you oppose the introduction of this deadly fishing gear to the West Coast by submitting comments on the proposed fishing permit.

After Hurricane Katrina, billions of dollars poured into the Gulf Coast region to rebuild.

Unfortunately, many corporations used these funds to enrich themselves instead of investing in the devastated communities. When Signal International needed workers to rebuild the shipping industry, they did not hire and train the local population. Instead, Signal used the exploitive “guest worker” visas and corrupt recruiters to hire cheap labor.

Welders and pipe-fitters from India paid recruiters up to $20,000 for the promise of temporary visas for themselves and their families. Upon arrival to the U.S. these workers were placed in cramped, unsanitary housing, charged exorbitant rent, had their passports taken from them, and were even physically beaten when they spoke out against these unacceptable conditions. Their working and living conditions in the Gulf Coast amounted to modern day human slavery.

We've said for a long time that Japan's so-called research program is actually commercial whaling in a flimsy disguise. But today, we have the evidence in our hands.

After a four-month long undercover investigation, Greenpeace exposed evidence of widespread embezzlement of whale meat occurring right under the noses of the public officials who run the whaling program.

The best cuts of whale meat, used to make whale bacon, are smuggled into crew cabins, preserved in salt, and then shipped home in boxes marked "cardboard" or "salted stuff" to be sold on the black market. Greenpeace intercepted one such box -- worth up to $3,000.

Greenpeace has evidence that more than a ton of whale meat was snuck from the whaling ship this year alone. One of our sources claims to have heard a crew member boast of building a house on the proceeds from his illegal take.

And, after all of this, we're still supposed to believe that the hunt is all in the name of scientific research to help the whales? Come on! Nobody is buying that line anymore.

Now is the time to rock the boat in Japan. The whaling program has been an embarrassment to Japan's Foreign Affairs department all year. Your letters helped cancel the humpback hunt - and now in the spotlight of this scandal, it's time to cancel the rest.

** Democracy For America **

Republicans can't win elections based on their failed philosophies, so, they've latched onto a new plan: make it as hard and expensive as possible for people to exercise their constitutionally protected right to vote.

Since the Supreme Court decided two weeks ago to uphold a draconian law in Indiana that requires citizens show a government issued photo ID to vote, Republican legislatures across the country have started moving fast to pass their own version of this horrible law.

And just like the poll taxes and literacy tests of the past, Republicans hide their real purpose under the banner of preventing possible voter fraud. But these laws are really about stopping senior citizen, low income, and newly registered Americans from voting. Why? Because they typically vote for Democrats.

We must stand together and protect every American's right to vote. SIGN THE PETITION NOW!

Discussing trophy wife Cindy McCain's tax returns, NBC's Curry did not note effect on old and senile McCain of wife's fortune or benefit to Cindy of tax cuts her husband now supports.

Nothing like being your old fashioned hypocrite now is there?

Fox News whore Williams cited old and senile McCain's immigration record as evidence of "working across party lines," but not his abandonment of bipartisan position.

You see, this is the problem with Faux news... They always ignore facts while pushing their own agenda.

America will not stand for a Secretary of State who approved torture and then misled Congress. We call on the Presidential candidates to ask Secretary of State Rice to resign

Our movement calling on all three presidential candidates to reject torture and demand Sec. Rice resign is growing. Click here to add your voice.

For years, BioGems Defenders have fought to halt the U.S. government's systematic capture and killing of Yellowstone's bison -- better known as American buffalo -- as they roam beyond the boundaries of the park in search of food during the harsh winter months. But this year the rate of slaughter has reached unprecedented proportions with more than 1,400 buffalo dead -- fully 30 percent of the buffalo population. In response, the NRDC Action Fund, our partner organization, is mobilizing a massive outcry to stop the killing.

Tell the National Park Service to stop the slaughter of Yellowstone's wild buffalo.

We all learned in elementary school how a bill becomes a law. First it's passed by Congress, then the President signs it.

But Rep. Don Young (repulsive republican-Alaska) seems to think we all skipped a step. He claims he did nothing wrong when he secretly changed the 2005 highway act, after it had been passed, to redirect $10 million to a new transportation project favored by one of his wealthy campaign donors!

You read that right. Rep. Young acted in the dead of night – without Congress' knowledge or approval, without the American people's awareness – to change the language in a bill after it had been passed by Congress, but before it got to the President's desk.

Ask your Representative to call for an investigation of Rep. Young today!

After seven years of watching Big Oil pay off politicians to block all global warming legislation, we may finally break through.

The Climate Security Act, which will soon be voted on in the Senate, shows promising first steps by calling for significant reductions in the emission of global warming pollutants.
But it's not enough in the face of a global warming catastrophe, and this is a critical opportunity to demand the precise solutions we need. For one, the bill needs to cut global warming pollution levels 80% by 2050.

Send your senators a note TODAY urging them to strengthen the Climate Security Act and pass a strong bill.

Legislation to protect us from defective and dangerous products is on the move.

With your help, we recently pushed the House and Senate to pass legislation that will make consumer products safer. Now we're heading to the finish line. Today, members of the House and Senate will begin negotiating differences in the legislation they passed and writing a final bill.

You can make a difference - by urging Congress to produce the strongest possible bill to protect consumers.

A February 2008 study funded by the National Park Service documented extensive chemical contamination in 20 western U.S. parks. Researchers found that persistent organic pollutants (POPs) like the pesticide endosulfan are threatening park ecosystems and wildlife health. Alarming levels of these chemicals were found in some of America's most seemingly pristine areas, including Rocky Mountain and Glacier national parks along with 18 other western parks from Texas to the far northern reaches of the Arctic.

POPs are among the most dangerous compounds ever produced. POPs persist in the environment, build up in body fat of animals (including humans), and travel the globe on air and water currents. Some of the human health effects now linked to POP exposure include cancer, learning disorders, impaired immune function, reproductive problems, and diabetes. Many POP pesticides, such as DDT and chlordane, have been banned for years in the United States.

Endosulfan is one dangerous POP pesticide still being used in this country, currently under review by EPA. Leaders in Congress should press for a ban of endosulfan and other POPs still in use that are contaminating national parks and threatening wildlife.

Add your name to the petition below to be delivered to the leaders of the committees in Congress charged with protecting our national parks and wildlife.
Tell Congress: Protect our Parks and Wildlife From Pesticides!

** John Kerry **
Over a week ago, the New York Times published a major investigative article, detailing a secret Pentagon program the Times said was designed to recruit and cultivate the "military analysts" you see on the major news networks in an attempt to create coverage favorable to the Bush Administration's policy in Iraq.
The Times described an extensive program, with dozens of television analysts involved, some of whom had extensive business ties to the Defense Department -- in fact they called it "an effort to transform the analysts into a kind of media Trojan horse -- an instrument intended to shape terrorism coverage from inside the major TV and radio networks."

Since that story ran, there's been a virtual news blackout, and we haven't gotten any closer to finding out the real story.

You can change that. I sent a letter to the Government Accounting Organization requesting an investigation, and I'd like you to show your support by virtually "co-signing" the letter with me. Only with an overwhelming display of grassroots energy can we put this story in the spotlight and press for answers.

In February, the House of Representatives heard the demands of voters like you and stood up to Bush administration demands for expanded surveillance powers and immunity for big phone companies that broke the law. But now, House leadership is on the precipice of caving in and handing over everything the President has demanded.

Your representative must hear that there will be a major backlash if he or she caves on FISA. Let your representative know you're watching.

Wash. Post, WSJ editorial pages urged release of tax returns by Teresa Heinz Kerry, but have yet to call for Cindy McCain's.

During the 2004 presidential campaign, the editorial pages of The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal called on Sen. John Kerry's wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, to release her tax returns, with The Wall Street Journal citing the role Heinz Kerry's wealth purportedly played in her husband's presidential campaign. But according to a Media Matters for America search of editorials since January 1,* the Post and Journal have yet to call for the release of Cindy McCain's tax returns, despite the role her personal fortune has reportedly played in the presidential campaign of her husband, old and senile Sen. John McCain.

CNN again uncritically aired McCain's false suggestion that Dems are proposing a "nationalized health-care system".

Despite the fact that neither Clinton nor Obama has proposed a nationalized health-care system, Acosta twice described McCain rejecting government-run health care. During the 3 p.m. program, Acosta stated that McCain "reject[ed] proposals for a government-run, universal health-care system," while during the 5 p.m. hour, Acosta said that McCain is "essentially coming out against, very strongly, any kind of government-run, government-managed universal health-care system."

According to a new Union of Concerned Scientists report, the true cost of meat and milk produced in massive CAFOs (confined animal feeding operations) includes billions in unaccounted-for taxpayer dollars that pay for the economic, health, and environmental problems CAFOs create.

CAFOs are supported by misguided government policies. Meanwhile, modern, alternatives are already in practice today that can produce the quantity of food we need, often without government subsidies. These alternatives can safeguard our health while protecting the foundations of our food supply—like healthy soil and fresh water. Please sign our petition to the secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), asking him to end policies that give an unfair advantage to the polluting CAFO industry and to support modern alternatives instead.

** Environmental Defense **
Senator George Voinovich (R-OH) proposed legislation that would postpone meaningful action on global warming pollution for at least twenty years.

In the meantime, the proposal would take away state authority to control global warming pollution, undermining efforts in dozens of states, including California, Florida, and the Northeast members of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, which have set ambitious emissions reduction targets.

We need to do everything we can to defeat Senator Voinovich's sham proposal. Email your Senators today.

I wonder why the "networks" are so quiet about this? What are you people hiding?

In criticizing Obama, Will falsely claimed that Social Security taxes are levied on household income.
Of course, the lemmings who read his trash, probably don't even know HOW Social Security taxes are levied because their over-paid tax accountant never told them.

AP report on old and senile McCain criticism of "Mission Accomplished" banner did not report his previous promotion of its message.

As climate change causes the continued shrinkage of Arctic sea ice, polar bears are increasingly at risk. Leading American scientists say placing the polar bear on the federal Endangered Species list is key to its survival.

A federal court has given the Bush administration until May 15 to decide if it will list the polar bear as endangered. Click here to tell Secretary of Interior Dirk Kempthorne that the polar bear, and its fragile Arctic habitat, requires protection from the effects of global warming.

Tonight marks the beginning of Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, when we honor the memory of the six million Jews who were slaughtered while the world stood silently by. As Jews, we have a deep understanding of the danger of inaction in the face of genocide. And so Yom HaShoah also serves as a reminder that as global citizens and advocates for justice, there is much more that we can do - especially for the people of Darfur.

This Yom HaShoah, please join me and other members of the AJWS community by signing an open letter that calls on President Bush not to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing. AJWS will deliver signatures to the White House on Monday, May 12.

Ever had food poisoning? Whew! It's not pretty. And for thousands every year, it's deadly.
The FDA inspects U.S. food processing plants only once every five to ten years, even less overseas. Yet more uninspected food is coming from China and elsewhere.

The recent recall of 143 million pounds of beef, after undercover video showed processors shoveling sick animals to slaughter, spurred an outcry about our failing food safety system. Now leaders in Congress vow to make real change. But it won't happen with out strong support from you.

Take a moment right now to support strong food safety bills in Congress.

So far, John Conyers has no takers.

The powerful and persistent Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee has invited a number of the leading figures in the Bush torture scandals -- John Ashcroft, George Tenet, John Yoo, Douglas Feith and others -- to appear at a crucial hearing on May 6th.

As of yet, not a single one of them has agreed to show up. In fact, John Yoo and John Ashcroft -- central figures in the Bush strategy for defending torture -- have already refused.

The recent revelations about the Bush administration confirm our worst fears about subversion of the Constitution and betrayals of the rule of law by top government officials -- that they met regularly and approved the CIA’s use of “combined” “enhanced” interrogation techniques.

We must get to the bottom of these allegations, and now we need your help. We’re flooding Chairman Conyers and the whole House Judiciary Committee with “Citizens’ Subpoenas.”

Let Chairman Conyers and the Judiciary Committee know you want them to go all the way by issuing real subpoenas, legally compelling Bush’s torture team to show up.

MSNBC right-wing whore Scarborough uncritically cited National Journal label of Obama as having "most liberal record in the Senate".
