Jan 14, 2009 -- Fight the Right-Wing Wackos Links of the Day.

** Environmental Defense Fund **

Congress is busy drafting an economic stimulus bill. The bill will include tens of billions of dollars in transportation investments, and hundreds of billions in other spending.

Saving and creating jobs is an urgent national priority. But there is a right way to do this and a wrong way.

We need to create jobs now by building the smarter, more efficient transportation and infrastructure system America will need in the 21st century, not throw money at "bridges to nowhere" projects that will set back our efforts to create long-term, environmentally sustainable growth.

Please send an email to Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Harry Reid urging them to support a smart stimulus package.

Some on the Right are gearing up to attack President-elect Obama's nominee for Attorney General, putting politics over principle in what they see as a possible proxy fight for judicial confirmation battles to come. Don't let them get away with it!

Tell Senators not to let the Right play politics with the DOJ. Tell them to CONFIRM Eric Holder.

The FOX network is giving a giant megaphone to a public official known for his anti-immigrant antics and racial profiling. Smile! You're Under Arrest will celebrate the slimy depths Sheriff Joe has been willing to sink to in Maricopa County, Arizona.

Well, we're asking that Joe get the attention he really deserves.

We're calling for an investigation into this dangerous man's record. Here are some highlights:

• 2,700 lawsuits have been filed against Arpaio

• Joe prioritizes immigrant sweeps over prosecuting felons (there are 40,000 outstanding warrants in his county)

• The Sheriff discriminates against Latinos, as found in an Arizona Republic study

Joe even staged a phony murder plot against himself!

HELP SHERIFF JOE GET THE ATTENTION HE DESERVES BY SIGNING THE AMERICA'S VOICE PETITION TODAY!

PFAW to the President Elect: Disappointed in You!

** People for the American Way **

Sign our open letter to President-elect Obama -->
Dear President-elect Obama,

We were gravely disappointed to learn that Rev. Rick Warren has been selected to deliver the invocation at your inauguration. Rev. Warren was a poor choice to lead the invocation due to his long history of hateful, divisive rhetoric on important cultural and civil rights issues. It's not just that we disagree with him on the issues--it's that he uses his powerful platform to marginalize those who disagree with him. He is not the sort of leader who can help unite Americans. We agree with you that everyone should have a seat at the table, but only those who treat others with respect should get a seat of honor.

FYI: Exposing the Lies of the Right-Wing Wackos, June 10, 2008

** People for the American Way **
Shortly after old and senile Sen. John McCain publicly rejected the endorsements of hate mongers John Hagee and Rod Parsley, Parsley released his own statement rescinding his endorsement and then sort of disappeared from sight.

Sometime since then, Parsley apparently decided that he had a bit more to get off his chest and so he released a video on his Center for Moral Clarity website in which he reiterated many of the points he made in his initial statement but added some attacks on what he claimed were the "politically vicious and misguided" hit-squads who exposed his radical views, claiming that his views on Islam are "very much in the mainstream" and insisting that he made a "clear distinction between Muslim terrorists and the vast majority of peaceful Muslims."

Watch the Video: http://www.rightwingwatch.org/2008/06/rod_parsley_pla.html

Michael "The Whiner" Savage's answer to homelessness: "Why not put them in work camps?".

I have a better idea, how about we put loudmouth, second rate radio hosts (he was fired from KGO 810 AM radio, the NUMBER 1 radio station in the San Francisco Bay Area) into fat boy camps? I am sure he could stand (or sit?) to lose about 100 lbs...

LA Times editorial falsely claimed "unusually centrist" (but still old and senile) McCain "oppose[s] a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage".

Get the facts people. Old and senile McCain does not support equal rights.

NY Times ignored old and senile McCain flip-flop on whether he believed Falwell was an "agent[] of intolerance".

Not sure if Falwell is still relevant. He's dead after all (Thank God). At the same time, there are others like Falwell but still wasting breathable air and needs to be exposed as the hate-mongers that they are.

Gannett, AP claimed McCain opposes a constitutional amendment banning abortion -- but McCain said he supports it.

Where the hell are the newsies getting their information? They are all becoming like Faux News and just lie for the hell of it!

People For the American Way's work to expose false-Pastor John Hagee for the hate-monger that he is helped lead to his repudiation by old and senile McCain. But old and senile McCain adviser gop-whore wanna-be Joe Lieberman hasn't gotten the message yet.

The Tongass National Forest in southeastern Alaska is the crown jewel of our nation's wild forests. At 17 million acres, the Tongass is home to a stunning variety of wildlife, including wild salmon, bears, eagles, and wolves. This key piece of our natural heritage should be preserved for future generations to enjoy, yet the Bush administration wants to open up 2.3 million acres of Tongass backcountry for roads and clearcut logging.

Tell the Forest Service that this pristine forest must be protected!

Tired of neocons, extremist evangelical Christians and right-wing Jewish leaders co-opting what it means to be "Pro-Israel?" For too long, these have been the loudest voices in American politics when it comes to Israel and the Middle East.
It's time to give voice to our values -- and call for real peace and security for Israel, the Palestinians and the entire Middle East. Stand strong against the politics of fear.

We can create the political power to promote real peace and security, without the hatred and fear-mongering from the extremists. Together, we can fight for a truly "pro-Israel" perspective: real American leadership for a negotiated end to the Arab-Israeli and Palestinian-Israeli conflicts.

Please take a moment to stand for a new pro-peace, pro-Israel political voice »

** Fresh and Easy Facts **

A new non-union grocery chain called Fresh & Easy is opening in communities throughout Southern California, Nevada and Arizona.

What’s different about this non-union grocery chain is that Fresh & Easy is owned by Tesco, one of the largest and most aggressive corporations in the world. Tesco is known as the "Wal-Mart of Britain" and they’re now opening stores in the United States under the name Fresh & Easy.

Tesco has refused to meet with UFCW leaders, and just like Wal-Mart, they want their stores to be non-union.

Tesco has already opened over 60 stores and are planning to open a further 150 by the end of the year. We cannot afford another company like Wal-Mart in our communities. Here’s what you can do:

Go to FreshandEasyFacts.com today to sign the pledge not to shop at Fresh & Easy.

For the first time in our history, the American military has turned its operational apparatus upon the American public. And it's high time that it stop.

On April 21, the New York Times ran a shocking expose on a Pentagon program to generate favorable news coverage of the Iraq war. Starting with the run up to the war, the program fed talking points and information to a set of retired military officials who appeared on TV thousands of times parading as objective pundits.

We're teaming up with some other groups like Freepress to send a letter to the five members of Congress - Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Armed Service Committee Chair Ike Skelton, Senate Armed Service Committee Chair Carl Levin and House Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs Chair John Tierney - who can start up Congressional hearings on this despicable program.

More than a million people are now living with HIV/AIDS in the United States. Half of those people are not in care. Another person is infected every 13 minutes. Infection rates have not fallen in more than 15 years. Clearly we need a plan.

While the U.S. requires other countries to come up with a National AIDS Strategy in order to receive our funding, we lack one of our own. Tell your Members of Congress to support a National AIDS Strategy today.

Repulsive Republican Pigs are in a panic about their chances this election year. And they're pulling out all the stops to keep voters away from the polls.

Their favorite vote-suppressing tactic of 2008? State laws requiring government-issued photo ID in order to vote.

Good thing we have champions in the states like Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius, who just yesterday vetoed a harmful voter ID law in that state correctly noting that it would "only work to disenfranchise many of the electorate and serve as a barrier to their participation in the democratic process."

And thanks to champions like Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan, who worked tirelessly with voting rights advocates in Missouri to urge the legislature not to pass the voter ID bill it was considering. On Friday, defying previously-held expectations, that bill went down with the end of the legislative session.

Voters in every state deserve leaders like Gov. Sebelius and Secretary of State Carnahan who will stand up for their rights.

Please sign our petition right now urging YOUR secretary of state to fight burdensome voter ID laws in your state.

Senator Jim Webb's New GI Bill, which would give our returning soldiers the education benefits they need, is up for a Senate vote this week. We're so close to reaching that critical 60-vote majority to overcome unprecedented filibusters and the opposition of President Bush and John McCain, but we need your help. That's why VoteVets has just released a TV ad demanding that John McCain do the right thing and vote for the New GI Bill.

** ACLU **
1) In a stunning admission to ABC news Friday night, President Bush declared that he knew his top national security advisers discussed and approved specific details of the CIA's use of torture. Bush reportedly told ABC, "I'm aware our national security team met on this issue. And I approved." Bush also defended the use of waterboarding.

The ACLU is calling on Congress to demand an independent prosecutor to investigate possible violations by the Bush administration of laws including the War Crimes Act, the federal Anti-Torture Act, and federal assault laws.
Take Action: Demand that your members of Congress reject torture by holding to account those responsible for approving and implementing these un-American policies.

2) Last May, the Supreme Court ruled in Ledbetter v. Goodyear that employees who have suffered years of pay discrimination cannot have their day in court if they don’t discover the discrimination within 180 days of their employer’s initial discriminatory pay decision.

The Ledbetter decision not only reversed years of employment law, it also ignored the realities of a workplace. Often employees don’t know what their co-workers are paid. Further, expecting that they learn that information within the first 180 days of a pay decision is unreasonable. Unless Congress intervenes, companies will be able to discriminate for years and unjustly profit from paying women, minorities, the elderly, and people with disabilities, as long as it keeps the discrimination secret for a few months.
The Fair Pay Restoration Act (S.1843), is now before the U.S. Senate. The time has come for the Senate to correct this wrong and let American workers keep their hard-earned dollars. Urge your Senators to support the Fair Pay Restoration Act!

** Democrats.com **
In the wake of the Monkey King's admission to knowledge of torture, we've come to a historic moment where every American - and every Member of Congress - must take a stand.

Either you're for torture or you're against it. And if you're against it, you must support the only Constitutional remedy for a President and Vice President who commit war crimes: impeachment.
Tell Congress to Impeach Bush and Cheney for Torture

** Humane Society **
The European Environment Commissioner has announced a plan to ban the trade in all seal products originating from inhumane hunts. This builds upon the historic declaration by the European parliament in 2006. If an EU-wide ban is enacted, the fashion houses serving the main markets for seal skins today -- China and Russia -- would be forced to stop, and millions of baby seals would be saved from cruel slaughter.

In the meantime, many nations have either banned seal product trade or announced their intentions to do so. They include: Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Croatia, Austria, Slovenia, Panama, Mexico, and the United States. Just the potential for an EU ban on seal products has saved thousands of seals already. Prices paid for seal skins this year have declined so much that most sealers have chosen to stay home.
Tell the EU that you strongly support a total ban on trade in seal products by signing the petition here.

** People for the American Way **
Repairing the damage to our Constitution and our standing in the world will take years, but RIGHT NOW certain senators can stop more of President Bush's dangerous judicial nominees from getting lifetime seats on the federal courts.
As the Republican tantrum over unconfirmed nominees continues, key Democratic senators are starting to echo what we've been saying: in these months leading up to a presidential election, controversial nominees need not and should not be considered for confirmation. Hundreds of Bush judges are already doing plenty of damage to your rights and legal protections.
Tell senators on the Judiciary Committee to stand up to Bush and his Senate allies by invoking the well-established Senate tradition of not considering controversial judicial nominees in the months leading up to a presidential election.

** Leahy for US Senate **
First the Bush-Cheney Administration tried to bully the House into accepting its own deeply flawed FISA legislation. Then White House officials and Congressional Republicans refused to meet with us to hammer out a better bill. And then the President and his allies blocked our attempts to temporarily extend existing surveillance legislation -- incredibly blaming Democrats for their own efforts to let the legislation expire.
Despite all of this bullying, cajoling, and foot-dragging, we're proud that our House Democratic colleagues stood firm, refusing to water down the strong, balanced FISA bill that passed the House and is now on its way to the Senate.
Urge the Senate to support the House's strong and balanced FISA bill -- forward an email to your Senators now!

Despite rallying cries around the world, China continues its harsh crackdown on protesters in Tibet and internal dissent, most recently by imprisoning noted human rights activist Hu Jia.

The Monkey King Bush has a unique opportunity to speak out for those who are silenced. By boycotting the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics, Monkey King Bush can join other world leaders in urging China to stop its repression of activists and work to improve human rights at home and in Darfur and Burma where China wields great influence.
Sign the Petition today!

** Amnesty International **
The Monkey King Bush recently announced that he would be attending the 2008 summer Olympics in Beijing. We are urging him to pressure China for human rights improvements before the Games. Despite promises to improve its human rights record, China has become increasingly repressive in the run up to the Olympics. Human rights activists are detained without trial, journalists are harassed and imprisoned, “re-education through labor” programs and executions continue unabated.
Send an e-mail to Monkey King Bush and demand the man-bitch to change his simple mind.

** People for the American Way **
Please help us give Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee the grassroots support they need to halt consideration of any more controversial Monkey King Bush judicial nominees.

It's time for the Committee Dems to invoke this rule. Tell them by adding your name to our petition at:
